Monica McCarthy is a Broadway actress, community impresaria, public speaker, and messaging consultant. She is the creator and host of the live monthly events series and podcast The Happier Hour: Philosophy To Help Your Life Suck Less, which aims to bridge the gap between academic philosophy and popular self-help.Monica was previously the impresaria for popular communities like Holstee, Impact Hub, Escape The City, and the 92Y, where she has curated and facilitated thousands of events including: Holstee’s Campfire Chats (on stage interviews with folks like Tim Urban, Gretchen Rubin, James Victore, and AJ Jacobs), Moonlight Society (a conversation series interviewing guests about life off the clock), 100 Days of Impact (in response to Number 45’s first 100 days in office), and Escape Mondays. Monica has facilitated workshops on the topic of purpose-driven communities and messaging for organizations including the United Nations Development Program, AirBnB, Eileen Fisher, Starwood, Brugal, Uber, amongst others. She frequently speaks on the topic of purpose and with organizations on the value of philosophy and community, including her TEDx talk Philosophy: The Life Hack Of The Future. Her love for meaningful dialogues began with her career as an actress, and her credits include the Broadway world premiere of "Time Stand Still" (as the understudy to Laura Linney and Alicia Silverstone) and HBO's "Mildred Pierce" (opposite Kate Winslet). As an emerging playwright, her first one-act play debuted at the William Inge Theater Festival in 2017, and is currently being workshopped as a full-length play.Monica is currently researching her second play based on the life of Fanny Imlay, daughter to Mary Wollstonecraft and step-sister to Mary Shelley. Monica prefers her bourbon neat, her coffee black, and the window seat from which she has seen 50 countries on six continents, and she still has zero sense of direction.
